End-of-August Excitement

And so we come to the FPSoccer blog post in which I remain annoying by harping on pickup play for the fall...

FROM ROBERT:

Here's what I've got so far for legue:

MEN: Robert, Ryan, Ron, Jon?, Josh
WOMEN: Amy E., Amy B., Jenny

Obviously, I'm hoping for a few more RSVPs. I'm assuming Steve B. will come on board as well. I don't know about Joe Guy, who is out of town. There's also a friend of Kris' who has asked to play.

Over the past few months, I've turned away a bunch of folks, so I don't think we'll have a huge problem finding more people.

But if we can't muster quite enough player, I'll probably enter the league as a free agent or (if possible) with small group (assuming my leg is healthy.)

I've been down the Belle Isle/Catalpa road before. We have a few good weeks when we get enough players, but most of the time, it was three or four of us standing around waiting for everyone else to show up. Two drops of rain and no one would show. (Ask Amy B., she remembers these days.)

In league play, I finally feel like we are competitive. I don't know why we'd stop now.

I remember many days like that as well, Robert. And let's not forget the time we just kicked the ball across the net the entire time and watched Brian practice his bicycle kick.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not anti-league, per se. I love playing competitive soccer. I just don't think the games we're playing ARE very competitive. And six years of that in a rec league is just, well... six years of it.

I'm not saying we should never do the league again. I guess I don't see any danger in taking off one six-week season to go have fun playing together for a while. Especially if that's what some of the teammates are asking for.

If the problem is simply getting people to show up for pickup games, we just need to find a way to get people to show up for pickup games. As it stands we're kinda throwing ourselves out to the wolves every week so each of us can play some portion of 50 minutes. In a way, I don't feel like we've really played soccer together since 2001. We've gone out there and frantically scrambled together since 2001.

That's why I'm down on it, but everybody gets different stuff out of the experience, and that's cool. No matter what, I hate to see the group splinter. I don't think anybody wants that.

(At any rate, it all could be a moot issue for me because, like Robert, I don't know yet how my leg will be holding up. Have to get back out there and pound my knee a bit!)

yes, there are those weeks. and then there are the glorious weeks when the sun shines and the wind comes off the river and everyone is friends and there's no pressure to perform or let the team down. for those of us (me) who don't ever really help the team out but want to play with our friends, league soccer can be tough. i just feel like i need a break from it, but i really don't want to quit playing or seeing my friends every week. what ever choice the team makes, i don't think i will be playing league this fall. sorry.

Hi all...
My only suggestion is that whichever route we go with, let's be committed to it.

Either option would be fine by me as long as we show up.

I'll do my best this season to make it to all the games/kickarounds!

Thanks, Ron

I want to stay in the league. Belle Isle is lovely but the committment isn't there for people to show up.
